The Baku Book Center on Jan. 12 hosted an event dedicated to Omar Faig Nemanzadeh (1872 - 1937), a remarkable Azerbaijani journalist, thinker, publicist, one of the founders and contributors to the legendary Molla Nasreddin magazine. Published between 1906 and 1930, Molla Nasreddin was a satirical Azerbaijani periodical edited by Jalil Mammadguluzadeh and named after the legendary Sufi wise man-cum-fool of the Middle Ages.
National writer Anar, Rector of ADA University Hafiz Pashayev, President of National Academy of Sciences Isa Habibbeyli, founder of Khazar University Hamlet Isakhanly and others spoke about the invaluable contribution of Omar Faig Nemanzadeh to the social and political life of Azerbaijan at the beginning of the 20th century, about his activities in Molla Nasreddin magazine. The speakers said that being one of the founders of Azerbaijani journalism, Omar Faig was persecuted, but he did not renounce his ideas until the end of his life in 1937. The guests also watched a documentary highlighting the life Nemanzadeh, and listened to excerpts from his articles read by actor Kamran Yunis.
The evening, hosted by journalist Afag Gambarova, also featured music by Azerbaijani composers performed by the Khazar University String Ensemble (artistic director Zulfiya Sadigova), People's Artist Elshan Mansurov, Honored Artists Ilaha Efendiyeva and Sahib Pashazade.
