National Music Day in Azerbaijan is celebrated each year on 18 September as a tribute to the great Azerbaijani composer, founder of professional musical art of Azerbaijan Uzeyir Hajibeyli, who was born on Sept. 18, 1885.
Each year on September 18 Baku residents hear live music by Uzeyir Hajibeyli in the city’s metro stations, parks and gardens.
The Baku Book Center also did not stand aside from this significant date. On September 18, an evening dedicated to the National Day of Music was organized in the Center.
Speaking to the audience, host of the event, Honored artist of Azerbaijan Nargiz Jalilova stressed great contribution of the outstanding composer Uzeir Hajibeyli to the development of national Azerbaijani music.
The music event featured People's artist of Azerbaijan Movsum Ibrahimov and mugam trio "Garabagh". They performed Majnun's aria from Uzeir Hajibeyli's opera "Leili and Majnun".
People's artist of Azerbaijan, pianist Murad Huseynov performed Kara Karayev’s preludes. People's artist of Azerbaijan Gulnaz Ismailova, People's artist Ulviyya Hajibayova and Honored artist Elnara Keberlinskaya performed Niyazi's song "Arzu", Gulchohra's aria from Uzeyir Hajibeyli's operetta "Arshin Mal Alan", "Baku" song by composer Vasif Adygezalov and other famous Azeri music pieces.
People's artist of Azerbaijan Mehriban Zeki spoke poems by Nasimi, Mehseti Ganjavi, Mikail Mushfig, Rasul Rza and Vagif Samadoglu over a jazz-music accompaniment.
The event was attended by cultural and public activists.
The contribution of Uzeir Hajibeyli to the development of Azerbaijani and world musical culture is invaluable. Traditionally, in September Azerbaijan hosts the Uzeyir Hajibeyli International Music Festival, organized by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Ministry of Culture. The festival brings together musicians from many countries.
