The Book of Disquiet is one of the great literary achievements of the twentieth century. Written across Fernando Pessoa’s lifetime and assembled posthumously from thousands of manuscript fragments, it was first published in 1982. This major new edition combines Margaret Jull Costa’s acclaimed translation with the most complete version of the text to date, presented for the first time in English in the order of original composition and accompanied by facsimiles of Pessoa’s manuscripts. Narrated mainly by Bernardo Soares, an assistant bookkeeper and semi-alter ego of Pessoa, the book is described as “the autobiography of someone who never existed.” It is a fragmented modernist mosaic of dreams, solitude, despair, and reflection, and a lyrical tribute to the streets and cafés of 1930s Lisbon. This edition offers the fullest expression yet of Pessoa’s singular inner world and literary genius.
